Discover Carlisle Cathedral
A visit to the Historic Quarter wouldn’t be complete without stopping by Carlisle Cathedral. Founded in 1122, this stunning medieval building boasts intricate stained glass, a beautifully decorated ceiling, and a sense of peace in the heart of the city. Don’t forget to explore the surrounding gardens and take in the history of one of England’s smallest but most striking cathedrals. When you step inside, don’t forget to look up! The stunning painted ceiling is a dazzling deep blue, scattered with golden stars, creating the feeling of standing beneath a medieval night sky.

Walk along the ancient walls, explore the dungeons, and learn about the castle’s role as a military fortress and prison. Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned here.
